ISO/IEC 30134-2:2026 Part 2: Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) published

This publication was preceded by several years of work, and the new version has been significantly improved compared to the old version from 2016.

ISO – International Organization for Standardization ISO/IEC 30134-2:2026 defines Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), the globally recognized key performance indicator (KPI) for quantifying how efficiently a data centre uses energy. As digital infrastructure continues to grow and power consumption becomes a growing concern, PUE provides organizations with a standardized way to measure the energy performance of their data centres and identify opportunities for improvement.

New regulations such as the EU Taxonomy and the EU Energy Efficiency Directive make it more important than ever to have a clear and transparent understanding of this.

In my current role at nLighten and supporting the Dutch Data Center Association, NEN & The European Data Centre Association – EUDCA, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the review of this standard with focus to ensuring the operational feasibility of this Key Performance Indicator.

Applying standards is important, but it must be ensured that the standard can actually be applied in the design, construction and daily operation of a data centre.

To be honest, there is always room for improvement, even now.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed for their cooperation in this matter.
