I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Project Lead / Main editor at ISO – International Organization for Standardization of the ISO/IEC 30134-9 WUE 💦 review, next to my role as Principal Operational Sustainability at Equinix
The ISO/IEC 30134-9 WUE is the international data center KPI for quantifying the efficiency of 💦 water usage in a data center.
The ISO/IEC 30134-9 is one of the KPI’s of the ISO/IEC 31034 series from the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 39 Sustainability, IT and data centres.
The review which already has started, will take three years in total. The workgroup will review for example the current categories. In addition, it will determine whether topics such as type of water, type of evaporative cooling, water stress, water recycling etc. will be included in the new standard.
In recent years, there has been a lot of attention for water use in data centers. For this reason, it is important to not only measure water use in a standardized way, but also to report it transparently.
More and more regulations like the Energy Efficiency Directive and the EU Taxonomy refer to the ISO/IEC 30134. It is therefore of great importance that not only the ISO/IEC 30134-9 WUE but also the other ISO/IEC 30134 standards are up-to-date.
